CDH Nurse Earns Advanced Certification

Carol Williams, B.S., RN-BC, of West Chicago, recently earned a certification in informatics nursing after successfully completing the nationally recognized exam. Currently Williams is an Epic Application Coordinator at Central DuPage Hospital (CDH).

Certified informatics nurses routinely support staff in using automated applications in their daily assignments and play an important interdisciplinary role that combines their passion for nursing with their love of technology, bringing a nursing perspective into the evaluation of innovative systems to achieve positive patient outcomes. Williams holds an associate degree in nursing from College of DuPage and a Bachelor of Science in health arts from University of St. Francis.

Parents of two grown children, Williams and her husband, Kent, reside in West Chicago.

Community High School District 94 January Peace Builder-of-the-Month

Jacob Schauer, of West Chicago, a freshman at Community High School District 94, has been recognized as the January PeaceBuilder-of-the-month.

When asked about his thoughts towards peace, Jacob responded, “When we help others, we make the world a better place.” He credits his parents with instilling in him messages of peace from an early age.

Jacob believes that everyone can do something, even a small act, to make a positive difference in the lives of others. His favorite movie promoting peace is the Blind Side. Jacob mentioned that he likes how Sandra Bullock’s character goes out of her way to help less privileged people. Jacob’s favorite quote, courtesy of Michael Jordan, is “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.”

Jacob has enjoyed high school so far and is a member of the freshman basketball team. After graduation, Jacob plans on attending college.

Megan Hernbroth Community High School January Student-of-the Month

The faculty and administration of Community High School would like to congratulate Megan Hernbroth, of West Chicago, for being selected Student of the Month for January.

As a student at Community High School, Megan has received numerous accolades. Over her four years she has been acknowledged as an Illinois State Scholar and a National Merit Scholar. Megan is also a member of the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society.

Megan’s excellent work ethic has a great deal to do with her success, but her teachers insist that it is more than hard work that sets Megan apart. One teacher reports that Megan is “motivated, bright, and committed to always doing her best. She sets an excellent example for her peers.”

Another teacher adds that Megan is most deserving of this honor because of her “diligence, leadership and kindness.”

In addition to her classroom achievements, Megan has more than distinguished herself as the editor-in chief of the Chronicle, the CHS Student Newspaper. The newspaper’s sponsor, Ms. Kuehn, enthusiastically commends Megan: “she puts in endless hours on the paper without complaint, guiding the staff with a firm but respectful hand. She never asks others to do what she won’t do, and will help people when she sees they are struggling.” In addition to her devotion to the Chronicle, Megan is an active participant on the track team as well as the cross country team.

Moreover, Megan is a positive influence in our school community. In addition to volunteering for the last four years during Relay for Life, she also volunteered this year at the Chicago Marathon. Megan currently serves as a member of the leadership team for the CHS InterAct Club.

Megan provides this advice to future CHS students, “Try to stay on track as an underclassman because it’s hard to catch up later on.” Megan would like to continue her focus on journalism at Northwestern University in the fall where she has been accepted as a Journalism Major.

The administration, faculty, and staff at Community High School congratulate Megan on all of her accomplishments and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.

In the very near future, the Food and Drug Administration may approve over-the-counter sale of rapid HIV-tests. This would be the first significant change in either policy or technology in the fight against HIV since the introduction of effective treatments more than 15 years ago.

  • Election Day Cowardice Written by Pam Gallagher

Tuesday evening, March 20, after completing a long tiring day as a democratic election judge from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson School, I walked out to my car in the parking lot and sadly discovered two 1.5" x 3" business cards left on the right and left door windows of my vehicle with the Obama campaign logo and the printed words: "Hi, I saw your Obama sticker and I want to thank you for letting the village know who the idiot is."

The thorium cleanup along the West Branch of the DuPage River reached my property last fall. I was hesitant to let around a dozen beautiful trees be taken out, but I believed in the greater good of removing thorium from this area, including my property.
