Fall is here. Or is it winter? Right now the leaves are turning and the air is crisp. It is a wonderful time of year to snuggle in for the cold months ahead and a perfect time to build up your business for the new year.

As the economy starts to turn, now is the time for every business to move forward in advertising and promoting itself. As a chamber, we provide many ways for area residents to know about your business, and we offer many opportunities to promote your business to others.

Why not get out of your comfort zone and attend a multi-chamber event? How about expanding your territory beyond the city limits?

As we run our businesses, we can get into the habit of operating in a certain way. Just because it worked the past few years doesn’t mean it is the best way to run your business now.

Do others really know exactly what your business does? You might be surprised how many people have no idea what your business could do for them.

Change is good—how do you respond to a newly remodeled business—how does it make you feel? Most of us respond by going there more because it seems new and up to date.

It works the same way in operating a business. Keeping our business on the cutting edge, trying new approaches, using social media sites, getting out of our comfort zone, and networking one on one with new people could be just what we need to increase our business and give it that fresh new look.

Why not start by attending one of the events listed below. Relationships are the name of the game—the more someone gets to know you and just what you have to offer them—the more likely they are to do business with you.

Oktoberfest 2009 Business After Hours Networking Event. Oct. 21, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Alden Gardens of Waterford, 1955 Randi Dr. (Aurora). Great food and drinks. Join us for a social networking time with the Warrenville, Plainfield and Oswego Chambers.

Multi-Chamber Progressive Luncheon. “The biggest luncheon of the year,” Nov. 13, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites, 150 S. Gary Ave. (Carol Stream).

The Carol Stream Chamber Women in Business have invited members of the women’s groups from Addison, Bartlett, Carol Stream, and Warrenville. Dynamic Professional Women’s Network and St. Charles will join them for this polka-dot-themed networking event.

Check out our website at www.warrenvillechamber.com for all the details.

Letters to the Editor

  • The Real Objection to the Pipeline Written by Connie Schmidt

Although there is concern for underground water reservoirs in Nebraska, this is not the only objection that environmentalists have to the Keystone XL Pipe line proposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.

  • A Letter to the Editor—And to All Who Knew Joe Voegtle Written by Jeff Carstens

Joe Voegtle passed away this last week. The President wasn't notified. There won't be a plaque at an Ivy League university. The New York Times didn't carry a single word. But there is a little corner of the universe where, for a time, everything stopped – a little town that could pass for anywhere in the United States; the town where Joe plied his trade, raised a family, and touched the lives of those around him.

  • How Do We Stop the Horn Blowing? Written by Rich and Ellen Kurowski

Why not do something constructive with the excess railroad funds? How about hiring a lawyer, familiar with dealing with railroad problems, to get the trains to stop blowing their horns?
