The Frances Williams Hosta is, without a doubt, one of my very favorite perennials.

Here you see her heavily pregnant in late summer with seed pods.

This lovely hosta is an American Hosta Society Distinguished Merit Award Winner. It has large, rounded green-blue leaves with a wide golden variegation around the outside of each leaf.

It grows tall, from 18 to 22 inches high, taller with the flower. Hummingbirds like the white flowers that grow out just above the leaf foliage in late summer.

In my garden, it seems to be snail and earwig resistant, which I believe is because of the thicker, corrugated, leather-like leaf.

Here’s the trick—keep her well watered. If you cannot keep her in a spot that is regularly moist, then you need to put her feet in the shade.

Although many tout Francis Williams as a sun lover, in my experience she is not and will suffer deep sunburn to the point where the plant looks like it has been fried in an iron skillet.

I do not water Francis Williams often; however, I keep the plant under my crabapple tree where she only gets a touch of morning sun and no evening sun at all.

Follow these few planting tricks, and you'll see how easy it is to have success with this delightful gem of a plant.

She might just be the grand feature of your shade bed.

Do not money to buy a building? Worry no more, just because it's achievable to get the loan to resolve all the problems. Thus take a student loan to buy all you want.

In the very near future, the Food and Drug Administration may approve over-the-counter sale of rapid HIV-tests. This would be the first significant change in either policy or technology in the fight against HIV since the introduction of effective treatments more than 15 years ago.

  • Election Day Cowardice Written by Pam Gallagher

Tuesday evening, March 20, after completing a long tiring day as a democratic election judge from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson School, I walked out to my car in the parking lot and sadly discovered two 1.5" x 3" business cards left on the right and left door windows of my vehicle with the Obama campaign logo and the printed words: "Hi, I saw your Obama sticker and I want to thank you for letting the village know who the idiot is."

The thorium cleanup along the West Branch of the DuPage River reached my property last fall. I was hesitant to let around a dozen beautiful trees be taken out, but I believed in the greater good of removing thorium from this area, including my property.
