The Adventure Continues

This will most likely be the last coverage here of Paul Hayes and his cycling trip from San Diego, to St. Augustine. I do plan to interview Paul when the trip is completed, and he returns home to Warrenville. I hope that this would be in a short article to appear somewhere on the front page of this newspaper

However, in this column I did want to keep you somewhat posted on the progress he is making and also talk a little bit about Paul.

As I have followed Paul on this adventure, I have gained a new perspective of him. Paul has made this “a pilgrimage”. Paul is a Pastor. He has a very firm faith. He is analyzing his daily experiences and learning from them in a way so different than many of us would. As Paul has said in his blog almost at the beginning, his journey is “to reclaim lost or abandoned or forgotten parts of self”

Paul has described people he has met along the way, and talks about relationships and what they mean to him. He encourages us to “take a chance this week, and talk to someone you don’t know”.

Paul has sent some gorgeous photos taken on this journey. . One of the photos that I really enjoyed was of a sign in front of the Campground Laundromat. That day they had biked 91 miles Paul called this a gift.

And he has talked abut how he is gaining a greater awareness of his thinking …”how narrow it/I can be”, and Paul continues, “I find this to be both a humbling and a holy gift”. Just watching Paul as he continues his journey has had a very similar effect on me.

The photo I am including is called “The Road Less Traveled,”.from Scott Peck’s book with the same name. With that photo, the following words from Paul Hayes: “We rode 55 miles through the desert today…no towns, no services…only the road and the creation under, over and around us. About halfway into the ride, I saw a distant canyon road, and I thought about Scott Peck’s book. I invite you and myself to be with that image this week.”

  • HIV Self-Testing Symposiums to be Held in Wheaton May 3, 5 Written by Brad Ogilvie

In the very near future, the Food and Drug Administration may approve over-the-counter sale of rapid HIV-tests. This would be the first significant change in either policy or technology in the fight against HIV since the introduction of effective treatments more than 15 years ago.

  • Election Day Cowardice Written by Pam Gallagher

Tuesday evening, March 20, after completing a long tiring day as a democratic election judge from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson School, I walked out to my car in the parking lot and sadly discovered two 1.5" x 3" business cards left on the right and left door windows of my vehicle with the Obama campaign logo and the printed words: "Hi, I saw your Obama sticker and I want to thank you for letting the village know who the idiot is."

  • Wrongful Dirt Removal Written by Michael Hoffmann

The thorium cleanup along the West Branch of the DuPage River reached my property last fall. I was hesitant to let around a dozen beautiful trees be taken out, but I believed in the greater good of removing thorium from this area, including my property.
