In an ongoing effort to fight invasive plants, FermiLab Natural Areas (FNA) has begun a weekly fall and winter cleanup program to remove invasive plants, shrubs, and trees while teaching volunteers the significance of native plants in the winter landscape.

The initiative began Monday, Nov. 7, and runs through winter every Monday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

On the first volunteer day, the focus was on removing invasive honeysuckle from the woodland. The plants could be easily identified as they were the only ones with bright green leaves remaining.

Enormous help came from Corona Tools who supplied six saws and six loppers to help the team with this project. This is part of the company’s Corona Cares Program that helps groups all over the country make a difference for the natural environment.

FNA is looking for more helpers. No prior experience is required to participate. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy boots and dress for the weather. In case of bad weather, the team will process and mix native seeds from the property indoors.

Volunteers meet at 1:00 p.m. every Monday through winter in the Lederman Science Center parking lot. For more information, email Ryan Campbell at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

FermiLab Natural Areas is a not-for-profit organization concerned about the 6,800-acre campus next door to Warrenville.

The property is an astounding natural garden filled with lakes, woodlands, native oak savannah prairie, a marsh, and much more. FNA’s mission is to maintain and help preserve these natural areas.

In the very near future, the Food and Drug Administration may approve over-the-counter sale of rapid HIV-tests. This would be the first significant change in either policy or technology in the fight against HIV since the introduction of effective treatments more than 15 years ago.

  • Election Day Cowardice Written by Pam Gallagher

Tuesday evening, March 20, after completing a long tiring day as a democratic election judge from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson School, I walked out to my car in the parking lot and sadly discovered two 1.5" x 3" business cards left on the right and left door windows of my vehicle with the Obama campaign logo and the printed words: "Hi, I saw your Obama sticker and I want to thank you for letting the village know who the idiot is."
