Pedal Power

As you read in the last edition of the Village Chronicles; Tom Jones has decided to discontinue writing the Pedal Power column and to turn it over to someone else.

That someone for now is me.

I believe part of our journey as cyclists is to do things we have not done before, and in the process to become in some way more than we are. “More” could be “stronger, healthier, wiser”, or some other characteristic.

Becoming more than we are in one area of our life affects and blesses other areas of our life. Life, like the different parts of our bodies, or our bikes, is linked together, all interconnected.

One gift I received for Christmas last year was a subscription to “Bicycling.” This publication comes out six times each year and includes a variety of columns. Some I glance at, others I scan and still others I read more carefully.

For example, in the current issue there is: “Wrenching Solutions … a dozen things you can do in 2012 to keep your bike running smooth all year long,” and also Roll out the Kinks …Use a foam roller to get all the benefits of a post ride massage” and—you get what I’m trying to say.

I invite you to take a look at an issue, something you can do at any library. Who knows what you might be drawn to or how something you read might affect what you think about or do in 2012?

I also invite you to log onto http://www.crazyguyonabike.com- subtitle – A place for bicycle tourists and their journal. The site offers stories, reflections, photos, helpful articles and more.

Today I am taking my bike to the shop to have it gone over and reassembled after its flight back from Florida and my cross-country ride with others through Adventure Cycling. Adventure Cycling’s site is www.adventurecycling.org.

  • HIV Self-Testing Symposiums to be Held in Wheaton May 3, 5 Written by Brad Ogilvie

In the very near future, the Food and Drug Administration may approve over-the-counter sale of rapid HIV-tests. This would be the first significant change in either policy or technology in the fight against HIV since the introduction of effective treatments more than 15 years ago.

  • Election Day Cowardice Written by Pam Gallagher

Tuesday evening, March 20, after completing a long tiring day as a democratic election judge from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson School, I walked out to my car in the parking lot and sadly discovered two 1.5" x 3" business cards left on the right and left door windows of my vehicle with the Obama campaign logo and the printed words: "Hi, I saw your Obama sticker and I want to thank you for letting the village know who the idiot is."

  • Wrongful Dirt Removal Written by Michael Hoffmann

The thorium cleanup along the West Branch of the DuPage River reached my property last fall. I was hesitant to let around a dozen beautiful trees be taken out, but I believed in the greater good of removing thorium from this area, including my property.
