SAY NO TO THE CITY OF WARRENVILLE GARDEN TAX! This month I was informed that the City of Warrenville is imposing an ordinance agreement with homeowners who have landscaping on city easement property around the city. It is called the Landscape License and Covenant Agreement. According to Warrenville’s Code Enforcement Officer it is a recently formed city wide ordinance, all residents in Warrenville, Illinois who have any landscaping  on easement property will be asked to sign the agreement and pay the fee, giving Warrenville control over what is put on your easement property. The fee is currently $35 to the city and approximately $40 to the county.

Tom Jones retired from the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission after five full years of exemplary service. During that period, Jones served on a citizen’s advisory committee that guided the city’s landscaping and beautification standards along key roadways: Routes 59 and 56. Also during that same period, Jones shared his expertise and talents with the local newspaper, authoring a column on bicycling in every issue.

And the city took notice.

At its regular meeting on Dec 19, Mayor David Brummel and the Warrenville City Council presented Jones with a Certificate of Appreciation for all of his efforts. Mayor Brummel recognized his volunteerism as a model of the work that many other volunteers provide the city on committees and commissions. Citizen involvement makes our community strong and doubly blessed.

The annual tax levy hearing was held at that same meeting, setting up the annual tax levy ordinance in early 2012. Dollars sought are actually lower than the previous year due to continued cost cutting.

The consent agenda was approved with only one item withdrawn for separate consideration. That item dealt with implementing a proposal that the Environmental Advisory Commission work with city staff to promote the Cool Cities Campaign for reducing global warming emissions. Alderman Stu Aschauer asked the item be discussed by the council because the specifics of the Cool Cities Campaign include elements of the Kyota Protocol targets for reducing global warming pollution, as well as Cap and Trade guidelines.

Although both of these items are not a specific requirement of the city’s approach to reducing its pollution footprint, Alderman Aschauer did not approve the inclusion of the language in the backup materials supporting the EAV proposal. Alderman Fred Bevier agreed with that conclusion.

The proposal, however, was approved by a 6-2 vote, both Bevier and Aschauer voting nay.

The next meeting of the council will be its regular format and will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012.

  • A Reader Begs to Differ Written by Linda Pille

In her latest column, Bobbie Mignin writes that she needs a clue before the election. I agree. She opines that President Obama has “not a good record”, and implies that he has accomplished little during this term with no solid plans for the future. A minimal amount of research would have clued her into a more accurate reflection of the president’s record.

It is always nice when Warrenville welcomes new businesses to town. However, I must admit I usually don’t pay too much attention unless I need the service the business provides.

Although there is concern for underground water reservoirs in Nebraska, this is not the only objection that environmentalists have to the Keystone XL Pipe line proposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.
