You can bike nine miles of paved roads that wind through the Morton Arboretum tree collections. Hop on your bicycle, and explore these expansive grounds in a new and adventurous way.
During the summer months, visitors can enjoy biking in an “auto-free zone,” as the roadways are closed to motorists during specific times on the weekends. Vehicle-free biking is not available on evenings of summer concerts or other events, but even when sharing the road, it is a great cycling experience.
You’ll find bike racks at the Visitor Center, Big Rock and Prairie Visitor Stations, Administration and Research Center, Thornhill Education Center, and near the gatehouses at the main entrance.
Bicycles are not allowed on paved walking paths, wood-chipped trails, service roads, off-road “cross-country,” or in Arbor Court, adjacent to the Visitor Center.
The arboretum follows the Illinois Bicycle Rules of the Road published by the Secretary of State’s office, and has Bicycling Guidelines posted on its website.
After exploring the 1,700 acres, you can replenish yourself with a snack or a scrumptious meal at the Ginkgo Restaurant. With floor to ceiling windows, visitors at the restaurant can enjoy their meal while looking out over a stunning panoramic view of Meadow Lake.
