Bike Shops Offer a Wide Variety of Makes and Models

Although bike shops attract most of their customers during the summer months, now is a good time to stop in, browse, and familiarize yourself with the many different styles and models of bicycles.

Unlike many retail establishments, most bike shops employ people who know their way around the product, a necessary requirement, since most of their customers are also quite knowledgeable when it comes to buying a bike or accessories.

Not all people love bicycles in the same way however. There is a great deal of diversity when it comes to choosing a bike. Youngsters tend to be into “BMX”, while the college crowd prefers the Fixed-Gear models.

Fixed Gear bikes meet many of the requirements for the average biker. One can buy a new one off the floor, or create a “custom” bike from older vintage models and a wide array of accessories that make the bike unique. Fixed-Gear bikes are also very easy to maintain.

Mountain Bikes satisfy the needs of the more aggressive rider who wants to get closer to nature by getting off the beaten path and onto the single-track trails. They are fun in the mud and in the snow, though some people like them simply for recreational riding.

The newer and more comfortable Comfort Bikes and Hybrid Bikes are gaining in popularity. These bikes have a number of comfort features for the recreational rider who just likes to get outdoors and ride around.

Then there are the “roadies.”—those who love Road Bikes and the cycle clothing that goes with them. These bikes and the attendant apparel allow long-distance journeys in reasonable comfort. Road bikes are fast too, and performance seems to be the main goal.

Check out the newer Commuter Bikes, all decked out with fenders, racks, lighting systems, bells, etc. Some commuters have taken a clue from the college-age folks, using older bikes and retrofitting them with the proper accessories to commute.

While many of these bikes are unisex models, there is a category of bicycle that appeals more to the gentler sex, the Cruiser or City Bike. There is something about that retro-look that really appeals to women, perhaps evoking strong childhood memories.

Different folks and different bikes, but the same basic objectives—exercise, the outdoors, and meeting great people.

There is a type of bicycle that will suit your pocketbook and fit your needs and wants. So, get out on a bike this weekend!

  • The Real Objection to the Pipeline Written by Connie Schmidt

Although there is concern for underground water reservoirs in Nebraska, this is not the only objection that environmentalists have to the Keystone XL Pipe line proposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.

  • A Letter to the Editor—And to All Who Knew Joe Voegtle Written by Jeff Carstens

Joe Voegtle passed away this last week. The President wasn't notified. There won't be a plaque at an Ivy League university. The New York Times didn't carry a single word. But there is a little corner of the universe where, for a time, everything stopped – a little town that could pass for anywhere in the United States; the town where Joe plied his trade, raised a family, and touched the lives of those around him.

  • How Do We Stop the Horn Blowing? Written by Rich and Ellen Kurowski

Why not do something constructive with the excess railroad funds? How about hiring a lawyer, familiar with dealing with railroad problems, to get the trains to stop blowing their horns?
