Why do avid cyclists wear those tight bike shorts? I often hear that question, along with some commentary that I cannot repeat here.

I have to admit that tight, black spandex bike shorts may look a bit strange to some people, but for a cyclist, bike shorts and other essential bike gear offer both comfort and function.

Once you get past that initial reaction to the look of bike shorts, you will be surprised by the comfort and functionality they provide. Their main purpose is to make those long rides more comfortable.

Bike shorts are designed specifically for a cyclists needs. There is padding in all the right places, strategically located seams. Tight fitting, flexible materials like Lycra and Spandex reduce air resistance, allowing a full range of motion along with breathability. Bike shorts don’t bind, and they make for a lot less perspiring.

The most important features of bike short styles and designs, including those that look like regular shorts, is the lack of seams in the crotch and the extra padding that reduces chaffing and discomfort.

There are a number of bike short styles and designs, including those regular-looking shorts known as baggy shorts. They have an inner lining, so you get the same benefits as the tight ones afford. Alternatively, you could choose an inner-short with padding, to wear under a pair of regular shorts.

Bike shorts cost from $30 to $100. The fewer panels, the higher the price. Bike short padding is normally made from chamois or synthetic material and varies in thickness. The fabric can also be thick or thin, sheer or shiny, and comes in a variety of wicking materials.

Don’t forget the most important cycling essential—your helmet. Make sure to wear it each and every time you ride.

  • The Real Objection to the Pipeline Written by Connie Schmidt

Although there is concern for underground water reservoirs in Nebraska, this is not the only objection that environmentalists have to the Keystone XL Pipe line proposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.

  • A Letter to the Editor—And to All Who Knew Joe Voegtle Written by Jeff Carstens

Joe Voegtle passed away this last week. The President wasn't notified. There won't be a plaque at an Ivy League university. The New York Times didn't carry a single word. But there is a little corner of the universe where, for a time, everything stopped – a little town that could pass for anywhere in the United States; the town where Joe plied his trade, raised a family, and touched the lives of those around him.

  • How Do We Stop the Horn Blowing? Written by Rich and Ellen Kurowski

Why not do something constructive with the excess railroad funds? How about hiring a lawyer, familiar with dealing with railroad problems, to get the trains to stop blowing their horns?
