The purpose of the event was twofold: first, encourage local residents to become more familiar with the restaurants and hotels in Cantera; and second, to collect food donations for St. Irene’s Food Pantry during difficult economic times. Of course, a third, purpose is implied: to have a good time being out and about in our very own town!
More than twenty-six bags of donated food and household supplies were collected for the food pantry. These came from approximately 36 participants, a smaller number than anticipated, but then financial times are hard, and only three restaurants were available for the program. Still, from all accounts patrons had a good evening filled with fun, good food and interaction with good people. One participant independently raised cash contributions for the food pantry; no report was available as to the amount raised.
Last December the Warrenville Hospitality Association sponsored a similar event called “Cantera Cares.” That event coincided with the worst rush hour blizzard of the winter, but 55 brave souls came out to enjoy the treats at 8 eateries just the same. That event also raised $2000 to benefit Warrenville Youth and Family Services.
The Hospitality Association has vowed to continue sponsoring the winter and summer events to benefit local charities while also increasing dining out locally.
