These are community issues currently under examination, subject to change or emerging. Village Chronicles will follow these issues and provide updates from time to time.

  1. Musselman Building. The building has been razed; the site is awaiting clearance of contaminated soil and large areas of concrete; site is being considered for redevelopment.
  2. Community Building. First floor supports currently being strengthened; roof support replacements and upgrading are next.
  3. Downtown? Which one? The Musselman building removal (see #1, above) will focus on the city’s campus near City Hall, Library, Park District, Community Building and Police Department, but other commercial hubs exist in town.
  4. Sub-area Planning by the city. The city’s Master Land-use Plan contains base assumptions for applying zoning standards on specific land plats throughout the city.

5.River clean-up progress report. Physical site work on hold due to bankruptcy of company paying for the clean-up.

6. Arts development: City funds the Tourism and Arts Commission (TAC) with Hotel/Motel Tax funds. Purpose of TAC is to increase tourism (keep the area hotels full) and support the arts; an outgrowth of TAC is the creation of the Warrenville Arts Council that has a mission to nurture and develop the arts and artists in Warrenville.

7 .Economic development. Underpinning the local economy are private employers, corporations, services, and organizations; helping them stay healthy are the City and Chamber of Commerce.

8. Tourism development. With four healthy hotels currently in operation and another two under construction, the business travel industry has a large presence in Warrenville.

Managing community change. Change is all around us and a constant; some is good, some bad; much is uncomfortable.

10.Church news. A dynamic element of our community, churches have worked together for generations to bring peace and well-being to the community; their teamwork brought us the Warrenville Youth and Family Services as well as numerous programs and support services.

11.Housing market pulse. We have a professional in the business to report homes sold recently and to give periodic commentaries on the state of the real estate market.

12.Going green and the city’s status. How ecologically friendly are we as a community? Do we provide means to preserve our planet, at least the portion we call home?

13.Volunteer opportunities. A healthy community is one that knows it is as strong as the well being of its people; relying on one another in many ways makes us stronger. Volunteer opportunities abound.

14.Roadwork. Each year the city repairs or rebuilds a portion of its roadways; reporting progress on those plans is our job.

16.Fitness and Health opportunities in the city: We are blessed with health and fitness assets in our community; some are public, others private, some specialized, many medical specialties; much to report on and we will do so.

17.Flood Management Issues: The consulting report is in and the City Council is not fully pleased with the results.

18.Forest Preserve developments and how they impact the city: A positive force in our community, the FP also is a public agency few understand; this may be caused by incomplete communications with the public on plans that will affect local people. The Mack Road fleet maintenance facility is the latest chapter.

  • HIV Self-Testing Symposiums to be Held in Wheaton May 3, 5 Written by Brad Ogilvie

In the very near future, the Food and Drug Administration may approve over-the-counter sale of rapid HIV-tests. This would be the first significant change in either policy or technology in the fight against HIV since the introduction of effective treatments more than 15 years ago.

  • Election Day Cowardice Written by Pam Gallagher

Tuesday evening, March 20, after completing a long tiring day as a democratic election judge from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson School, I walked out to my car in the parking lot and sadly discovered two 1.5" x 3" business cards left on the right and left door windows of my vehicle with the Obama campaign logo and the printed words: "Hi, I saw your Obama sticker and I want to thank you for letting the village know who the idiot is."

  • Wrongful Dirt Removal Written by Michael Hoffmann

The thorium cleanup along the West Branch of the DuPage River reached my property last fall. I was hesitant to let around a dozen beautiful trees be taken out, but I believed in the greater good of removing thorium from this area, including my property.
