Chamber Corner

What a Year! The economic downturn has affected all of our businesses, making us cut back in staff, services, etc. I hope that we have reached the bottom of this sliding decline.

The chamber would like to thank all of our businesses that showed us their support by remaining a part of us. We would not be in existence today without the support and extra efforts of our members. I especially want to thank the executive board and our board of directors for giving 110 percent to keep our chamber going.

Thanks to the City of Warrenville for providing financial assistance at our lowest point and the Warrenville Park District for stepping up to help us in anyway they could after our cutback in staff. No words can express our deepest gratitude for their support and acknowledgement that the chamber is of significance to the Warrenville business community. We are also thankful that the Warrenville Park District will be co-sponsoring the Summer Daze event with us in 2010.

As we look forward to the New Year, the chamber has many opportunities planned for our members and business community. We welcome our newest group, Western DuPage Women in Business of the Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton and Winfield Chambers of Commerce. This group has four events planned for this year plus a seminar in September.

Join us for our “Lunch and Learns” which will be four sessions on Marketing for Small Businesses. These sessions will be held at SpringHill Suites during the lunch hour, giving small businesses information on how to improve their skills for marketing their businesses on the internet, newspapers, in person, etc.

Our first event is Feb. 25. Watch for more details coming soon. Check out our website www.warrenvillechamber.com for upcoming events. All of these events are open to businesses in the community and the surrounding area. As a chamber, we want businesses to succeed, and we want to provide opportunities for them to grow and improve.

Congratulations to our new 2010 Board of Directors: Chairman of the Board-Andrew Carman (Edward Jones Investments), Chair Elect-Bernie Niewoehner (NorthStar Credit Union), Past Chair and Vice President Operations-Brian Caldwell (BCG Group), Secretary-Sheila Rutledge (Captured), Treasurer-Linda Pezzullo (Jonlyn & Associates, CPAs), Golf Outing Chairman-Jerry Schilf (Employee Benefits by Design), Membership Chair-Chris Prestegaard (American Chartered Bank), Marketing Chair-Sherry Dvorak (Amalgamated Bank of Chicago), Ambassador Chair-Sandra Wolf (Country Inn and Suites By Carlson), Summer Daze Co-Chair-Jim Salek (Premiums Plus Promotional Products, Inc.), Women in Business Chair-Cristen Austgen (MB Financial Bank), Lolly Frederick (Training Plus, Inc.), George Safford (Village Chronicles), Frank Sprude (Frank Sprude Attorney at Law), Jeanne Hoffer (The Aubrey Sign Company)

  • The Real Objection to the Pipeline Written by Connie Schmidt

Although there is concern for underground water reservoirs in Nebraska, this is not the only objection that environmentalists have to the Keystone XL Pipe line proposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.

  • A Letter to the Editor—And to All Who Knew Joe Voegtle Written by Jeff Carstens

Joe Voegtle passed away this last week. The President wasn't notified. There won't be a plaque at an Ivy League university. The New York Times didn't carry a single word. But there is a little corner of the universe where, for a time, everything stopped – a little town that could pass for anywhere in the United States; the town where Joe plied his trade, raised a family, and touched the lives of those around him.

  • How Do We Stop the Horn Blowing? Written by Rich and Ellen Kurowski

Why not do something constructive with the excess railroad funds? How about hiring a lawyer, familiar with dealing with railroad problems, to get the trains to stop blowing their horns?
