A Gentle Reminder From a Concerned Friend of the Paper - To the Editor,

I wanted to alert the people of Warrenville that if you don’t pay attention, you may lose your newspaper.

Over the last year, we have been fortunate to receive—for free—a newspaper that specifically serves the people of Warrenville.

Other “local” papers have traditionally overlooked Warrenville. Our population is small, and our businesses few, relative to the surrounding towns. So even in better times, the media has ignored our community in coverage of our news events, city business, calendars, awards, recognitions and all things Warrenville.

The Village Chronicles is almost completely a volunteer effort, operated by committed people that want to continue to bring you the news. To date the paper has been privately bankrolled by a few individuals who—unbelievably—have seen fit to invest significant amounts of their own money because they believe in the effort. That private money is almost gone.

However, there is good news! The paper, together with its ever-evolving website, can easily continue to operate if it receives the equivalent of $10 per household per year.

For a measly $10 (less than 20 cents per issue) we can keep this paper going. Businesses support the paper by buying advertising, but not in sufficient numbers to completely cover all of the costs.

The paper is delivered to approximately 5500 Warrenville households and 1500 businesses each week. Around $3300 per week is needed to cover postage and other basic costs. Small stipends for two of the staff who have left their paid careers are included to allow them to devote full-time efforts to the paper.

You may rightly ask “Why don’t they get status as a charity if they want a donation?” The answer is that they would have to expend significant money and time to manage the initial and ongoing paperwork and legal requirements of becoming a non-profit.

Not every household can or will donate to this effort, I know. Many may not care or read it. But if you value what it does for this town—if you value the voice it gives to us—then I implore you to join me in the following:

*************************************

Send a check for $10 or more to Village Chronicles, P.O. Box 632, Warrenville, IL 60555 before the end of the month.

Include your:

Name_____________________________

Amount Donated $______________

If you can afford to send more than $10 then please do so for those that can’t or won’t.

If you can’t send it until after January please send it by sometime in the first half of February.

If you are a business, please consider a donation or purchase of an ad.

**************************************

If you would otherwise donate but don’t want to bother with a stamp or addressing an envelope, I will volunteer to arrange the personal pick-up and delivery of your check.

This is so do-able. Let’s show ourselves and everyone else what Warrenville can do for itself.

  • HIV Self-Testing Symposiums to be Held in Wheaton May 3, 5 Written by Brad Ogilvie

In the very near future, the Food and Drug Administration may approve over-the-counter sale of rapid HIV-tests. This would be the first significant change in either policy or technology in the fight against HIV since the introduction of effective treatments more than 15 years ago.

  • Election Day Cowardice Written by Pam Gallagher

Tuesday evening, March 20, after completing a long tiring day as a democratic election judge from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Johnson School, I walked out to my car in the parking lot and sadly discovered two 1.5" x 3" business cards left on the right and left door windows of my vehicle with the Obama campaign logo and the printed words: "Hi, I saw your Obama sticker and I want to thank you for letting the village know who the idiot is."

The thorium cleanup along the West Branch of the DuPage River reached my property last fall. I was hesitant to let around a dozen beautiful trees be taken out, but I believed in the greater good of removing thorium from this area, including my property.
