Language Conversion Classes

Intermediate Level Spanish and English Conversation Classes are coming to Community Baptist Church. One of the best ways to increase fluency when learning a language is to carry on conversations with native speakers of the language. This is a major part of the learning experience in the English-Spanish Conversation Class offered by Community Baptist Church.  The class structure is unusual, in that it brings together Spanish speakers who want to improve their English skills and English speakers who want to do the same in Spanish.  During the first part of the class, volunteer teachers provide intermediate level review of grammar topics and help students to build vocabulary. The second part of the class brings Spanish and English learners together for conversation practice. Three class segments of about 10 classes each are planned for the year, with each segment ending with a class party. This is the third year that the classes have been offered, and in the past, they have attracted an enthusiastic group of participants. These classes (for teens and adults) are being offered free of charge starting on September 15, and running until Dec. 1. Classes meet on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and childcare is provided. New students may register at the first class. There is a nominal charge for student materials. For more information, call Community Baptist Church at 630 393-9609.

  • The Real Objection to the Pipeline Written by Connie Schmidt

Although there is concern for underground water reservoirs in Nebraska, this is not the only objection that environmentalists have to the Keystone XL Pipe line proposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.

  • A Letter to the Editor—And to All Who Knew Joe Voegtle Written by Jeff Carstens

Joe Voegtle passed away this last week. The President wasn't notified. There won't be a plaque at an Ivy League university. The New York Times didn't carry a single word. But there is a little corner of the universe where, for a time, everything stopped – a little town that could pass for anywhere in the United States; the town where Joe plied his trade, raised a family, and touched the lives of those around him.

  • How Do We Stop the Horn Blowing? Written by Rich and Ellen Kurowski

Why not do something constructive with the excess railroad funds? How about hiring a lawyer, familiar with dealing with railroad problems, to get the trains to stop blowing their horns?
