The End of a Story

Written by Tom Jones

I had breakfast with Paul Hayes earlier this month. What a great way to start out a day.

You will remember that Paul, a Warrenville resident, recently completed a bicycle tour across the Untied States, having pedaled from San Diego to St. Augustine. Paul is in his mid 60s. I had to tell him that he looks even younger now than he did when I saw him before the trip. This guy looks great!

Bike Shops offer numerous advantages when compared to mass merchants or discount department stores regarding the purchase of bicycles or bicycle-related accessories. Here are some tips.

Bike Shop owners have looked closely at the main consumer issues and complaints regarding the purchase of a bicycle. .If a bike buyer pays attention to these tips and works closely with their favorite bike shop, they will find a comfortable, fun bike they’ll want to use, not one that will just gather dust in the garage.

Christmas Gifts For Kids!

Written by Tom Jones

As much as I would like it to be, the top selling toy or gift item is not likely to be kids’ bikes.

For many years, electronics and video games have been the top-selling gift items for Christmas.

The Adventure Continues

Written by Tom Jones

This will most likely be the last coverage here of Paul Hayes and his cycling trip from San Diego, to St. Augustine. I do plan to interview Paul when the trip is completed, and he returns home to Warrenville. I hope that this would be in a short article to appear somewhere on the front page of this newspaper

An Update

Written by Tom Jones

A few weeks ago I told you about meeting an interesting cyclist who lives here in Warrenville. His name is Paul Hayes, and he and about a dozen other cyclists are doing an Adventure Cycling Tour called the Southern Tier--a ride from San Diego to St. Augustine. At this writing, Paul is in his second week of riding. The photo was taken as they crossed the desert.

It Seems Like Yesterday

Written by Tom Jones
On September 21, 1999, I rode my first Century ride. On October 4, 1999, the following article appeared in The Daily Herald. The article was written by Vicki Sabula.

I wrestled with the idea of sharing it here, and finally made the decision to offer it here in my column today. My wish is that it will be an inspiration to one of you readers, I still love to ride my bike, but those hundred milers haven’t been occurring recently, Here is what Vicki wrote:

Get Out There!

Written by Tom Jones

More and more people deciding to commute to and from work on their bicycles this year. Sadly, this is likely due to the nearly $4-per-gallon price of gasoline, rather than to any large-scale fitness program.

But for those of us not riding our bikes to work each day, here are some suggestions of organized “invitational” rides that may serve as enjoyable trade offs, when it comes to exercise.

From California to Florida

Written by Tom Jones
Warrenville has a population of 13,400. How many of that number are cyclists, I don’t know. But I keep meeting them, one at a time, and it has been a lot of fun.

My most recent acquaintance is Paul Hayes. Paul grew up in Harvard, IL and used a bicycle to deliver newspapers, as did many of us as young lads. His true fascination with bicycling came later in life.

  • The Real Objection to the Pipeline Written by Connie Schmidt

Although there is concern for underground water reservoirs in Nebraska, this is not the only objection that environmentalists have to the Keystone XL Pipe line proposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.

  • A Letter to the Editor—And to All Who Knew Joe Voegtle Written by Jeff Carstens

Joe Voegtle passed away this last week. The President wasn't notified. There won't be a plaque at an Ivy League university. The New York Times didn't carry a single word. But there is a little corner of the universe where, for a time, everything stopped – a little town that could pass for anywhere in the United States; the town where Joe plied his trade, raised a family, and touched the lives of those around him.
