Election 2012—A Tough Call

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin
The presidential election is nine months away, and the barbs are already flying; infidelities are out in the open, and the current president is hoping that people won’t like wealthy candidates and will re-elect him for another four years.

Roma—The Rest of My Story

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

Pasta could be my dinner every single day of the week—I love it.

Zitti, fettuccine, spaghetti, lasagna, stuffed shells—these delicious carbs always entertain my taste buds.

People and Style in Roma—Travel in Italy Part 2

Written by Bobby Mignin
I don’t know if I would say people in Italy were friendly, but if you knew some rudimentary Italian, it was helpful.

As I mentioned in the last column, I didn’t expect anyone there to speak English, since it is Italy, and we rented an apartment in a typical older Italian neighborhood. Just like everyone here should expect to speak English—it’s an American country.

Oh Roma, We Loved You!

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

Sometimes when opportunity knocks, despite the obstacles and roadblocks, you have to go for it.

Our son Brett and I just returned from visiting daughter Rachael who is studying in Italy. Our trip was a remarkable and unforgettable event, but before we left, I was faced with a familiar dilemma.

Murder and Scandal – Why All the Turmoil?

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

The holidays are approaching, and there is much good will is in the air.

People seem nicer and merrier around this time. If you are lucky enough to have family and friends in the vicinity, then sharing the good times is even more plentiful.

The passage of time takes parents on a journey that follows the pattern and flow of the activities of their children, and, as the kids grow older, the journey requires increasing responsibilities from parents and children alike.

Back to Reality--TV That Is

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin
Okay, after a two-week commercial break, it’s back to reality television and The Glee Project.

What makes reality shows so compelling to watch? I asked a couple of my co-workers who watch a variety of that type of television, and their answers were similar.

They like to watch some trashy TV just to relax and forget about their own stress, their problems, and their workload. It’s a form of escapism. A girl who likes to watch “Say Yes to the Dress,” likes to see the gowns and the drama. A guy who loves “American Pickers,” likes to see what junk the duo can find. He also enjoys the stories behind the junk, whether historical or just humorous in nature.

Is it Real, or is it “Hollywood” Real?

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

Reality shows on TV are here to stay. They multiplied like rabbits and infiltrated like roaches – you just can’t get rid of them.

The genre in itself labeled “reality” is truly a contrast to what you see. When you finally see the reality show on air, it has been edited, reworked and repackaged into moments that will surprise, shock and hopefully interest you. If it were real all the time, it would be boring.

The solemn 10-year anniversary of 9-11 has passed. It was a time of reflection, a time when everyone thought about what that day meant personally, locally, and globally.

Where were you when the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center?

School Bells Are Ringing

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

Another school term has begun, and it is not the little ones I am saying goodbye to in the morning.

In fact, pretty soon it will be just one that I see off to school. College-aged Rachael is off to Loyola University-Rome for study abroad for four months, and high school senior Brett is the lone child to get up with in the early AM.

  • The Real Objection to the Pipeline Written by Connie Schmidt

Although there is concern for underground water reservoirs in Nebraska, this is not the only objection that environmentalists have to the Keystone XL Pipe line proposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.

  • A Letter to the Editor—And to All Who Knew Joe Voegtle Written by Jeff Carstens

Joe Voegtle passed away this last week. The President wasn't notified. There won't be a plaque at an Ivy League university. The New York Times didn't carry a single word. But there is a little corner of the universe where, for a time, everything stopped – a little town that could pass for anywhere in the United States; the town where Joe plied his trade, raised a family, and touched the lives of those around him.

  • How Do We Stop the Horn Blowing? Written by Rich and Ellen Kurowski

Why not do something constructive with the excess railroad funds? How about hiring a lawyer, familiar with dealing with railroad problems, to get the trains to stop blowing their horns?
