Icy Conditions Contribute to Car vs Train Accident

Written by Staff Writer

The West Chicago Police Department and Fire District responded to the intersection of Kautz Rd. and Roosevelt Rd. at 5:20 a.m. for a reported crash of a train versus a car on the Union Pacific railroad tracks that are immediately east of the intersection.

After investigating the traffic crash, it was determined that a 1997 Ford Aerostar, driven by a 51-year-old Chicago resident, was traveling westbound on Roosevelt Rd. and lost control on the railroad tracks due to the icy roadway.

The Aerostar crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck a 1999 Honda Accord driven by a 43-year -old St. Charles resident.

The Accord then left the roadway and struck a pole on the south side of the road.

The Aerostar stalled on the railroad tracks and the driver left the car. An eastbound Metra commuter train, with approximately 25 passengers onboard, struck the unoccupied Aerostar.

Also during that same period, Jones shared his expertise and talents with the local newspaper, authoring a column on bicycling in every issue.

City Council Hard at Work

Written by George Safford

The regular meeting of the Warrenville City Council held Nov. 7 lasted 13 minutes, although the council did continue in closed session for a period of time thereafter.

Contrast that with the Community Development and Planning Committee of the Whole meeting held Nov. 14 that went on for nearly three hours and contained many detailed agenda items and lots of discussion.

Former U.S. Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, and the Prairie Parkway were part of a report that aired last Sunday on the CBS television news magazine “60 Minutes”.

CBS TV reporter Steve Kroft was in the area about six weeks ago, “working on a piece on how members of Congress profit from insider information,” said Jan Strasma, a member of Citizens Against the Sprawlway, in an e-mail this week.

  • VC is Hypocritical Written by Scott Shaw

I am responding to, and have a question for managing editor, George Safford. Why is it okay for Mr. Safford to insult the Chronicles readers, but it is not okay for us to have an opportunity to properly defend ourselves? Your editorial policy is a disgrace to free and open speech.

  • A Letter to the Editor—And to All Who Knew Joe Voegtle Written by Jeff Carstens

Joe Voegtle passed away this last week. The President wasn't notified. There won't be a plaque at an Ivy League university. The New York Times didn't carry a single word. But there is a little corner of the universe where, for a time, everything stopped – a little town that could pass for anywhere in the United States; the town where Joe plied his trade, raised a family, and touched the lives of those around him.
