A River Without Water—Temporarily

Right in our own backyard—we can see a rare feat of engineering—man harnessing the power and flow of a river.

Take a walk down the prairie path east of Batavia Rd. At the bridge you see when you cross the river on Butterfield Rd there are huge diesel engines sucking the river into a pipe. The water is moved downstream in the pipe below a temporary wall structure and again released into the river. A huge section of river is without water; trucks and men scurry about digging in the river bottom.

On Saturday, Sept. 25, the CHS Education Foundation will honor the 2010 Distinguished Alumni at its Autumn Flame event.

Tom Marziani, class of 1943, will be the first recipient of the CHS Distinguished Alumni Award for Entrepreneurship, and Michael C. Lach, class of 1986, will be awarded the first CHS Distinguished Alumni Award for Education.

More than 250 golfers, joined by PGA Professionals Curt Byrum, Todd Dempsey and Chris Smith, tested their skills Aug. 27 at Medinah Country Club to raise funds for the Central DuPage Hospital Foundation. In total, more than $380,000 was raised after expenses from the day’s event and activities.

Bright Future for Cenacle Property

I have read the thoughts of some other readers on the appearance of the Cenacle property,  and I felt the need to add my views.

The [DuPage County Forest Preserve District] is in the process of naturalizing the property. For hundreds of years the Cenacle property was an Oak Savannah. At some point [not too long ago], the landscape under the Oak trees became mowed grass.

Wheaton South’s Kevin Streelman is At It Again

Wheaton Warrenville South alum Kevin Streelman came into his own as a professional golfer two years ago, when he cracked the million dollar mark for the first time.
Warrenville is blessed with open land - the kind of land suitable for development. But for what purposes?

It would be best if future land development produces economic benefits like property tax revenue, sales tax collections, and jobs for local residents, yet keeps the air clean and city support services at a minimum.
