Every person who lives in your household must be counted, whether they are a citizen or not. The purpose of the census is to obtain an accurate picture of our country.

The City of Warrenville receives federal grants for such projects as hospitals, schools, senior citizen centers, public works and emergency services according to its population. In order to serve you better, the city has to be sure that everyone living here is counted. That is why you have seen signs around town saying, “You Count. Be Counted.”

The information that the Census Bureau collects is confidential by law, so be sure to count everyone living in your house, apartment or condo. The number of classrooms, health services, libraries and public works are determined by the census. The census also determines the number of representatives we send to the House of Representatives in Washington.

Be sure to answer the ten questions completely or you may receive a telephone call from the Census Bureau to clarify your responses. If your form is not returned by April 1, a census taker will knock on your door to collect it.

Census takers take an oath not to share your answers with anyone. The Census Bureau will never contact you by e-mail. So beware of any e-mails or phone calls claiming to be the Census Bureau asking you for confidential financial information, your social security or credit card numbers. Anyone asking for personal information is not from the census bureau. Delete the e-mail without opening it or you will subject yourself to identity theft or fraud.

Information that the Census Bureau is collecting includes the name, age, gender, race and other relevant data regarding every person living in each household. The Census Count gives an accurate portrait of the shifting demographics that have occurred in the United States since the year 2000. We can plan for more schools if we know how many children will need an education in the next ten years. We can also build adequate housing and services for the next generation of senior citizens. So be counted.

Because we are a country inhabited by many language groups, you can read explanations in 59 languages. Bilingual forms are being mailed in English and Spanish to Hispanic households.

A copy of the ten questions can be read online. However you must mail your answers to the Census Bureau on the form provided by mail.

En Marzo de 2010, un formulario corto de 10 preguntas será enviado a cada hogar de los EE.UU. y Puerto Rico. Es muy importante que todas las personas que residen en los Estados Unidos responden a las 10 preguntas y luego envíenlas por correo en el sobre con franqueo pagado adjunto. Para obtener los servicios que nuestras comunidades necesitan para un futuro más sólido, primero debemos entender quiénes somos como nación. Por eso existe un censo. Tenemos que contar cada una persona que vive en los Estados Unidos, incluyendo los que no tienen papeles oficiales. Las respuestas a las preguntas son privadas y están protegidas por leyes federales. Asimismo, no se la harán preguntas relacionada con su situación legal en el país. Los datos obtenidos en el censo ayudan al gobierno federal a erogar más de $400 mil millones de dólares en fondos federales cada año en hospitales, centros de capacitación laboral, escuelas, centros para adultos mayores, proyectos para obras públicas y servicios de emergencia. Además, el censo ayuda a determinar el número de escaños que Illinois tiene en la Cámara de Representantes de los Estado Unidos.

El gobierno no puede continuar hasta que cada hogar reenvíe el formulario de 10 preguntas. Si no envíalo completado, un censista podrá visitarle en su casa, escribirle por correo o llamarle por teléfono. El censista nunca va a ponerse en contacto contigo por e-mail.Ten cuidado con personas qu se engañan como censistas o el Census Bureau en qualqier manera para obtener información confidencial.
