Maintaining Your Software
Your PC operates using hardware and software. The hardware on and in your computer contains things you can touch, such as the keyboard, monitor, mouse, hard drive, etc. Last issue we discussed the ways you can keep your computer running more efficiently, focusing on the hardware side of things.
Why Hard Drives Fail
Hard drives are precision instruments. Every component inside needs to work in harmony, or it will not correctly read the disks.
Like anything with moving parts, it will eventually wear down. In addition to normal wear and tear, hard drives have other factors that can lead to their failure. Moving the laptop while its reading and writing can cause the magnetic disk to get scratched. Dropping the laptop can shake the disk with force. In addition, your hard drive can overheat, expanding the metals inside if the laptop is not properly ventilated or its ventilation is blocked by dust.
