Some Like It Hot

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

Are you having fun yet? The summer so far has really been a summer. This time last year, according to meteorologists, we only had four days of 90 degrees and above. As of July 14, we already had nine days of 90 and above. By now it’s probably 12.

July 4th Weekend Redux

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

This past weekend was the warmest 4th of July in seven years. We really lucked out with perfect weather for barbeques, parties, parades, festivals and of course, firework displays.

With Warrenville’s theme of “Red, White and Blue goes Green,” I did see many people biking or walking to Cerny Park, a positive environmental move.

How did that happen? The Fourth of July is almost upon us with the theme, “Red, White and Blue Goes Green.” It isn’t summer without a celebration of our independence, and in Warrenville it is a great tradition.

Neighbor to Neighbor

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

Another happy milestone has hit our household—high school graduation. All the worn, tired clichés about how quickly time passes, literally in a blink of an eye, is all too true. It does. It has.

To think our little blond-haired girl (born with a full helmet of jet-black hair!) just graduated from Wheaton Warrenville South is dreamlike. She isn’t four years old anymore? How did that happen?

Last week our town lost an incredible woman, Cathy Bernas. Many in Warrenville knew her from those who worked with her volunteering at Johnson and Hubble schools, from Bible Study, from baseball games, long-ago bunco parties, church, and just from the neighborhood.

When It Comes to Soap, Less is Often More

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

It has been said we Americans use too much soap. We bathe too much, put too much detergent in our washers and we are just too clean.

In most European countries, for example, people only bathe and shampoo once a week. Moreover, don’t forget, many foreigners do not condone the use of deodorant—eeek! (Coincidentally, that rhymes with reek).

Do You Have All the Right Stuff?

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

We Americans love stuff, don’t we? Some of us even hire professionals to tidy up and get rid of the clutter and stuff we have accumulated. Full circle recycling in some cases!

The Pros and Cons of Easter Brunch

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

Is It Really Worth It?

Isn’t it nice to hear that spring has arrived? Of course the weather never matches the season, but we Midwesterners should all be accustomed to by now—22 degrees overnight and 70 degrees by day. Typical.

Let’s Hope There Are No Bugs In This Apple

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin

Well, I hope to never encounter a computer virus again. I had an opportunity to choose a new laptop, courtesy of my boss, (for working from home a few days a week). Oh so tempting—I had to choose an Apple.

I think back to the early 80s when we purchased out first PC. It was probably a Gateway product, and it was quite exciting to be free of a typewriter and not just have the use of a business computer.

Ho Ho Ho--Holiday Changes

Written by Bobbie S. Mignin
Economic upheavals have changed the way we live—we are all tightening our proverbial belts and evaluating what is important versus frivolous. Normally at Christmastime, we spend more entertaining and buying gifts.

This year was different. Businesses, large and small, cut back or omitted parties. Some requested “no spouses or guests.” Gone are the days of company dinners or even lavish appetizer spreads with an open bar. Bonuses? Hardly. Corporate America and Mr. Small Businessman are feeling the crunch.
