Like the Olympics, the World Cup should play a strong and vital role in creating unity among nations, since it provides a common ground with which all can identify, regardless of cultural diversity and political differences.
Twenty-five years ago, Walter T. Selsted invented and patented his swimming pool cleaner, a small vacuum device that makes its way over the entire surface of the pool, encountering and removing, via serpentine hose, all floating leaves, needles, bugs and other debris—a robotic pool boy, sans sun screen.
Seventy years of good health, seven great kids and close to a dozen grandchildren, should make anyone feel fortunate. I confess however that like all of us, I often tend to take for granted the gift of life and loved ones, and that, my friends, is a huge mistake.
I had a bit of an epiphany last week though, when three of my four grown sons took it upon themselves to orchestrate a trip with the old man and a smattering of grandchildren to Dyersville, Iowa, home to the Field of Dreams, the widely-known baseball diamond created 20 years ago as the site of the renowned motion picture with the same name.
Late last summer, when I asked WWS Coach Ron Muhitch for his crystal-ball outlook on the upcoming season, he was hesitant to make any predictions. The Tigers had lost a bunch of starters to graduation from last year’s team, and they were about to open the season with two non-conference games against state-ranked teams.
“What I do know is that our entire football program, from last year’s freshmen through the varsity, has an unbelievable won-lost record,” the coach told me. “So we have the talent at every level. But I also know that we have a very tough schedule, and we are replacing a lot of starters, especially on defense.”
