Tigers Victorious in Classic Contest
Despite several critical turnovers and some questionable officiating, Saturday’s Class 7A state championship game between Wheaton Warrenville South and Glenbard West was just what it should have been—two evenly-matched teams going down to the wire for the top spot in the state.
“I’m really proud of our kids,” said Tiger coach Ron Muhitch, whose team came away with a 31-24 win in double overtime. “But I’m proud of Glenbard West as well. It’s great to see two teams, just a stone’s throw away from each other, represent DuPage County so well.”
Cantigny Park, part of the McCormick Foundation, invites runners and walkers of all ages to enter the Cantigny 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Nov. 7. The event is held annually in association with Veterans Day.
Net proceeds from the race will benefit the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, a transitional living facility in Wheaton that provides assistance to U.S. vets in need, including skills for independent living.
Registration for the 9:00 a.m. race is limited to the first 800 entries, up from 700 in 2008. Full registration has been achieved every year since the first Cantigny 5K in 2004.
The Sky’s the Limit for Velocity Sports Performance 12 U Boys Basketball Team
Written by Martha SprudeThe Velocity Sports Performance 12 U boys travel basketball team came up with its second tournament victory of the season, winning the June 24-28 Bulls Academy Summer Jam Tournament with an impressive 42-27 victory over Bulls Academy Lisle in the championship game at the United Center in Chicago.
“Knowing we lost to [this team] in a previous game 47-32, it was a little tense going into the championship game against them,” said first-year head coach Dan Howard. “But this victory shows just how confident our team is, and the strides we’ve made toward becoming better.”
Aside from the usual pre-game butterflies before a championship game, the 12U boys had the added pressure of performing at the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls; a venue where many players dream of playing at the NBA level.
“When we arrived at the United Center, everyone had their cameras out and were taking pictures with their families,” said Howard. “But once all that was over, I had to sit them down in the locker room and remind them we were not there to take pictures—we were there to play basketball.”
And play basketball they did, by dominating the opposition in consecutive wins of 42-20, 40-14 and 42-27 in their last three games. It was an accomplishment that sent many families home very happy after a tough tournament.
“We think that all the hard work the kids have put in through training at Velocity Sports Performance and playing a very tough schedule paid big dividends this weekend,” said team parent Ken Bacorn, who congratulated Coach Howard and the boys on a great achievement.
The tough schedule included playing teams with much older players early in the season, which can be demoralizing to some young players, but it served to make the players on this team stronger.
“This team’s abilities are only limited by how good they want to be,” says Howard.
The 12U boys basketball team is based out of Velocity Sports Performance in Warrenville and includes the following players: Jordan Glasgow, Scott Strom, Zachary Lendino, Marcus Mims, Mitchell Mims, Ronnie Griggs, Brennan Warnick, Scott Michaels, and Eric Bacorn.

Wheaton Warrenville South reigns as Class 7A state champs, after defeating Glenbard West 31-24 in double overtime this afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.
For the Tigers, it marked the sixth time that they have captured the state title, their last one also coming under the tutelage of Coach Ron Muhitch back in 2006. Only four of the 760 Illinois high school football teams can lay claim to more than six state football championships.
(The randomly picked) Team A won yet again with a final score of 26 – 20. They were able to stop some big plays early on and get some quick points up on the board. Team B answered by playing with a hurry up offense and also was able to get some turnovers, but there just wasn’t enough time left on the clock for them to catch up and win. Another great game will be played this coming Saturday Oct. 3rd at 2:00pm at Cerny Park in Warrenville. Armchair quarterbacks, this is your time to get off of the couch and show us your stuff! Walk-ons are always welcomed and encouraged! Come on out and play!!
